The World Needs You.
Students for Community and International Development (SCID)
The quest to find
solutions to the widespread and increasing levels of poverty and the
accompanying human suffering and misery in the developing countries and many
parts of the world has propelled and elevated the practice of community and
international development as a very viable and growing sector. The field of
community and international development explores and provides practical tools
for addressing and tackling many complex national and global issues such as
poverty, globalization, environment/climate change, law/human rights,
governance/democracy, global health, peace, conflict prevention and management,
rural development/food security, literacy/education, urbanization/urban
development, housing/homelessness, migration, water, hygiene and sanitation,
maternal/child health, human trafficking, adolescent health/youth development,
population/family planning, women’s health and rights, gender equity and
equality.
Community and international development practitioners are in the forefront of actively contributing to solving these local and global challenges by working in relevant institutions at the national, regional or global levels or by working closer to the grass roots in the field and engaging communities in designing, planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating innovative and sustainable people – oriented solutions.

While the practice of community and international
development is an exciting endeavour, pursuing a career in the field involves
specialized training and proper understanding of the field.
Many
individuals, especially students and recent graduates have passion for serving
others and for working to improve people’s quality of life. However, it is important to note that it
takes more than passion and desire to successfully work in the development
field. To be able to make a difference, an individual need to be fully equipped
with relevant knowledge and skills in exploring
the linkages between local and global development perspectives, program
planning, implementation, and evaluation including skills in research,
advocacy, social mobilization, monitoring and evaluation and development
communication including writing and oral presentation, critical thinking and
analysis, problem solving , and the ability to take initiative on the one hand,
and the knowledge of principles of organizational management and leadership as
they relate to social enterprise and non-profit organizations.
Unfortunately, many
recent graduates are not adequately prepared from school for a career in the
field in spite of the limitless career opportunities locally and globally.
Emerging development
leaders need to acquire professional skills that will help them to start or
advance in their career and to connect with other professional colleagues and
organizations to enhance their professional networks. They will also learn from practitioners in the field who
share their passion and who have been involved in successful local and
international programmes. Adequate professional preparation combined with volunteerism, community activism and internships, opens up a diverse range of career options for individuals in the community and international development field.
