The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, on Thursday urged members of the Volunteers of Ilorin Community and Environs (VOICE) to remain in the vanguard of the movement for community development. Sulu-Gambari made the plea when members of the group paid him a courtesy call .
Newsmen report that the group, which promotes volunteerism, is to embark on an entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability initiative. The traditional ruler said the objectives and vision of the group were in line with his vision on how developmental efforts could assist residents of the city. ”I have always looked forward to a project like this and I am happy this is happening during my reign.

”Your project on volunteerism to develop ourselves and the community is a pioneer initiative which is unique and it could not have come at a better time. ”I assure you that you have my full support and the support of all residents and I will help you get the support of notable people in the state. ”We are just hoping that this will spur other people too to come up with programmes like this that will alleviate our suffering and cater for our needs, ” the emir said.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Chief Volunteer of the group, Lawal Olohungbebe, said the group was committed to creating a community that would not rely solely on government for all its needs. ”Our intention is to awaken the spirit of volunteerism within Ilorin because we don’t want to keep waiting for government to do everything for us as we are mostly affected by most of these things.

“ We intend to start working on our own by doing our bit and we would welcome if this is complemented. ”There are people on ground already who have skills and they have volunteered to train others for free by giving them entrepreneurship ideas. “ If such people are interested, they can pay such people to learn more. ”In addition, we want to help ourselves to improve our environment and not wait for others to do that for us, ” Olohungbebe said.
