Introduction

Justification/Background:

Today, our communities are faced with development challenges on an unprecedented scale. They include poverty, poor sanitation, lack of access to credit, food insecurity, water scarcity, deplorable environmental and housing conditions, lack of jobs and unemployment, unrepaired roads and other critical services including health and education. In recent times, the scope, scale, and urgency of these problems have all sharply increased.

Community participation does not only represent taking part in an action planned by health care professionals in a top-down approach. The concepts of health promotion, self-care and community participation also developed during in 1970s in the developed countries.

Many people in Sub-Saharan Africa still work in agriculture; on average, over half of the labor force, and even more in poorer countries and localities. Yet the share of the labor force in agriculture is declining (as is normal in development), leading African leaders and economists to focus on job creation outside agriculture.
